I don't think that's it, I just think too many journalists want to 
be Woodward and Bernstein without doing the mind-numbing detail work 
they did to BECOME experts on a subject, if only briefly.  

I hate reading news stories about things I know well, such as the 
Internet, the level of details they get wrong is appalling to me.  I 
recall one story in the New York Times in which the statement was made 
that Google owns USENET.  (Anybody who has even a mild clue what USENET 
is knows how ludicrous that statement is.)  

When I was on the school board here, I'd read the stories about our
board meetings and wonder if the reporter was at the same meeting I was.
