They aren't the only organizations facing that.  I work with a
not-for-profit national membership association (the US Chess Federation)
that has lost nearly half of its adult memberships in the past
decade.  Younger kids, including my sons, aren't playing chess, they're 
playing adventure-based board games.  (I believe the American Contract 
Bridge League has similarly declining/greying adult membership.)

My father-in-law had a sign by his desk (it's by mine now):  

   When you stop being better, you stop being good!
