This looks to be an unintended effect of the BCS: in the "old system"
Oklahoma would be in the Orange Bowl five out of the last seven years,
unable to play USC or LSU or Florida and probably not playing Boise
State, either. (Maybe they would have played West Virginia in 2008,
maybe not.) It's possible that Stoops would have a much higher bowl
winning percentage despite being the exact same coach; only the
perception would have changed.
I'm trying to decide if that's a good or bad thing overall, which
perception of Stoops would be closer to reality, and how many other
"great coaches" of the past would be thought of as chokers if #1 had
always played #2 in a bowl game.
