The only people who want a playoff in college football are people who are NFL fans first and then CFB fans second.
I know 100-plus hearty, dedicated CFB fans and less than 5 want a playoff, even the plus-one version. This is not the NFL, nor do we want it to be. (For example, the Eagles took about half the season off with inept play and now very well could be in the Stupor Bowl.)
Since almost 90 percent of sports writers are NFL fanatics (I am a sports editor by profession; I see this all the time. No other sports attracts every sports writer other than the NFL) when they pay attention to CFB (only late in the season) they want it to be like the NFL, which is familiar to them.
Every time CFB takes a step towards the NFL, whether it be timing rules, replay, style-wise (thank God the West Coast offense failed in CFB), or postseason-wise, I don't like it and I don't think most true CFB fans do, either.
I do, however, quite agree with Steven that I dislike the BCS. But I want the old New Year's Day back, with five bowls, conference tie-ins, etc., not an NFL-style playoff.
BTW the rest of the world would look at "playoffs" American-style and shake their heads; in their (soccer) leagues the regular season is everything, plus Cup play, in which (horrors!) NO SEEDING is used, it's just a random draw and everybody's in them anyway.
I don't see CFB fans besieging the NFL to change its game to be more like CFB (CFB replay, for one, is better than NFL replay rules). Why the reverse? Because pro American sports fans can't imagine anything else but NFL-style playoffs.
I like, as Harry said, the arguing, disputes, who's-No.-1? stuff, it makes the sport what it is.
Hands off, NFL fanatics!!
