Prior to the Mid-90's I think is was strictly a vote by coaches in one poll
and sportswriters in another

In 1984 BYU (not quite Utah--but similar) went undefeated beating Michigan in
the Holiday Bowl( I think it was 24-17 lead by QB Robbie Bosco)--They were
voted #1 as no other schools from a big name conference went undefeated that
year--

I think the old approach was fine--BYU probably deserved the ranking and
there was no computer system to deny them--the only way they would have been
denied was if those voting felt their accomplishments in a seemingly weaker
conference was not merited.

I dont know how I would vote regarding Utah, but they certainly do not have a
shot in one of the polls--This does seem unfair--I still like the old way--It
creates a lot of discussion and arguments !

I would venture that the NCAA hoops tournament probably gets it right less
than half the time--it really is about the team that gets hot for a 3 week
period--more power to those that coach their teams to win the tournament, but it
doesnt seem to represent the best team--though does create a lot of pools which
everyone but Rick Neuheisal seem to enjoy !
