As a coach, Carmody is excellent. His teams play about as well as their
talent allows. As a recruiter, he sucks at the Big 10 level because he
never pulls in players who are great athletes. As we saw again last night,
Michigan State is a far more talented team than NU, a statement that has
been almost universally true of our opponents since I matriculated in 1964.
Talent, talent, talent. We have some, more than in past years, but still
not nearly enough to compete for an NCAA berth, although we might pull off
an upset or two. Carmody recruited height, but he didn't recruit
rebounders, which is what has caused us to be 0 - 2 and likely 0 - 7 before
we get to Indiana. Shurna has possibilities, but Rowley is a project on the
scale of the Hoover Dam. We have no go-to guy to break down a defense,
little speed relatively speaking (and we're faster now than ever), we don't
jump well, we have no muscle except Rowley and he is painfully slow, most
often we cannot finish a fast-break (except maybe Thompson), and we're lucky
if we pull down one contended board in ten tries. That describes forty-four
NU basketball teams for me. Enough already.
