True enough -
I'm sure the U$C coaching staff at the time figured that Keyshawn's value to
recruiting out weighed the chance he'd be declared ineligible.
I'm not sure, however, how much a big showing in the Rose Bowl is worth to a
kid heading into the draft. Johnson was somewhat more desirable as a pro
after the Rose Bowl.
Coaches are also more careful who they let play in bowls now - we see a lot
more kids sitting out the bowl due to grades than we used to - but then we
have a lot more 5th year guys looking to improve their draft status. I'm
sure that Peterman, Lane and Ward get more looks in the draft room now than
they would have two weeks ago, the same applies to Sutton.
IMHO of course..<g>

Subject: Re: [NU Sports] Keyshawn in RB HOF?
The ineligible tag only works if the game was played AFTER the start of
spring or winter classes, unless the coach chooses to pull a kid's
eligibility prior to those dates.
Mr. Johnson was obviously a high draft pick going into that game. No coach
of any college (except NU, State Penn, Rice, SMU, Vandy, and maybe Duke)
would screw up a kid's chances to reflect well on their school on Sunday.
As I understand it Johnson was later declared in-eligible and Barnett was
later offered the Rose Bowl trophy which he refused
The starting back for USC was declared academically in-elgible for the Rose
Bowl this year-I assume that was because during the fall sememster , he
didnt get the grades or enough credits
And do the pros care that a kid was academically in- eligble -- ?Perhaps
they care if he was suspended or kicked off for behavoir (although most dont
seem to care about that either)
