That argument doesn't hold water, because it ignores the fact that Texas lost to Texas Tech, who Oklahoma crushed.
The regular season IS truly special, and does mean something. It's part of why I find college football much more interesting than the NFL game.
The BCS system is certainly better than the old days when bowl bids were handed out in October and there were often years when the two top teams absolutely could not face each other due to conference bowl tie-ins.
But it's clearly not a perfect system, and is not well-suited to dealing with this year's situation, where we have several 1-loss teams and one undefeated team from a much weaker conference.
I think I've come around to the "plus one" idea myself. Put the big four bowl games back on New Year's Day, where they should be, and follow that with one more championship game.
