I agree, the thread should die--let's let my response to John and the follow-ups on both sides end here.? I may have overreacted, and if I inferred too much, I apologize--to John and to the List.? However, John's comments did not come in a vacuum, and it was in that context that I spoke out, perhaps as intemperately as I thought he did.? John has sent me some kind and thoughtful comments off-line in the past, and for that he probably deserved better from me.? However, he has also made some hurtful comments over the years--not to me, but aimed perhaps at other groups or ideologies.??
I truly believe we need to all listen more to each other and to try to find the common threads?that unite us, as I believe our President-Elect has eloquently stated (and acted upon--e.g., his invitation to Rev. Rick Warren to pray at the Inaguration).? I am sorry I got all of us off-message.
This past football season has been one of the most enjoyable ever for all of us as 'Cat fans (except for the game in Bloomington and the OT in San Antonio).? We have much to look forward to--with an incoming University President who seems to "get it" on all levels, academic and athletic, to succeed Henry Bienen, a Head Coach in Fitz who inspires his players, and makes us proud to be fellow alums with him, and a "genius" of a DC in Hankwitz, who may make us competitive in most games for years to come.? So let's all go back to what we were talking about, before some guy in the NY 'burbs so rudely interrupted.....:-)
By the way, Arthur, I don't like hip-hop either.

From: neonrye at aol.com> > P.S.:? John:? Your slur of Detroit and its residents
(and I must confess, having been there a couple of times, it is far from my
favorite city) is really outrageous.? There is a racial tinge to your comment
that I find offensive, and I would guess I am not alone.? As we roll into the
New Year, and await the Inaguration of our first African-American President with
great hope and expectations, why don't you can the cant.>
This thread deserves to die a horrible death, but I have to ask those of you
self-proclaimed open-minded thinkers who took offense to John's "slur": What
about his statement was "racial"? Are you sure that you aren't reading more
into this than is warranted? Is it *really* racism, just because the inner city
of Detroit is primarily African-American? I don't like hip hop music, I think
it's a bunch of tripe. Does that make me a racist? I hope not, but it does
seem that 95% or more of all hip hop performers appear to be African-American.
As of later this month, 100% of sitting U.S. Presidents will be
African-American. Holy cow, if I criticize him, am I a racist? Please clarify
these questions for me, as if I am in fact a closet racist I would like to
cease. Of course, you'll need to come up with another term for a person who
believes in the inherent superiority of one race over another, because the
previous term has now been rendered utterly meaningless.
