Yup.
Difficult loss.
Team played well against a ranked opponent again.
You knew that Illinois would make a run at the end, but until they put
the press on, we were handling it really well.
We were really just one made basket or one less turn-over away from
Illinois starting to foul. Given how we were shooting free throws, it's
likely we would have won the game at the free throw line. In fact, as
other posters have pointed out, Illinois was just about to start the
parade to the free throw line when we called a time out.
Bottom line, we needed someone to step up in the last three minutes and
make a play. We didn't get that from our players and Illinois did.
That, more than anything else, is the difference between where we are
and where we would like to be. Coble and Moore can't be the only guys.
Last night was Shurna's opportunity but he just couldn't get the shots
to fall.
As far as I'm concerned where we are is much better than where we've
been. We have the coaching, the scheme, and players who can execute the
scheme to overcome our athletic deficits and be competitive with anybody
in our league.

You know, just once I'd like to see a sentiment about the basketball
team that's somewhere between "we could make the T-word" and "Carmody
might/should be fired." (Not to pick on Alan; this was just the latest
example.) Yes, the loss sucked, and losing at home doesn't bode well for
the rest of the Big Ten schedule, but I doubt anyone is nearly so gloomy
if that Illinois player misses the last shot. There is a middle ground
between the two roller-coaster extremes, folks, and I believe that's
where the truth currently resides.
Personally, I've been more excited about (and had more fun watching)
this basketball season than any in about 15 years, and unlike the 1994
season this team isn't packed with seniors. If this were supposed to be
a peaking year (like that of our football team), I guess I would be more
discouraged. As it is, the only way I'd consider getting rid of Carmody
would be if we went on a major losing streak and missed the postseason
altogether.
For the sake of our entire athletic program, I hope Jim Phillips isn't
as mercurial as this list can sometimes get.
