You know, just once I'd like to see a sentiment about the basketball
team that's somewhere between "we could make the T-word" and "Carmody
might/should be fired." (Not to pick on Alan; this was just the latest
example.) Yes, the loss sucked, and losing at home doesn't bode well for
the rest of the Big Ten schedule, but I doubt anyone is nearly so gloomy
if that Illinois player misses the last shot. There is a middle ground
between the two roller-coaster extremes, folks, and I believe that's
where the truth currently resides.
Personally, I've been more excited about (and had more fun watching)
this basketball season than any in about 15 years, and unlike the 1994
season this team isn't packed with seniors. If this were supposed to be
a peaking year (like that of our football team), I guess I would be more
discouraged. As it is, the only way I'd consider getting rid of Carmody
would be if we went on a major losing streak and missed the postseason
altogether.
For the sake of our entire athletic program, I hope Jim Phillips isn't
as mercurial as this list can sometimes get.
