It's possible but not all that likely. If you look at the top 25 schools
from 40 years ago, most of them are still there. Temporary blips at
schools like Michigan and Nebraska are just that--temporary. And
while Kansas State worked itself up to that tier, the real challenge
is staying there. Whether the return of Bill Snyder to Manhattan will
bring back their glory years remains to be seen. (Heck, Notre Dame
is still looking for a return to THEIR glory years, too, and there's
a school that has ALL the advantages.)
In other words, it's a pretty exclusive club.
Interestingly enough, in many quarters what happened at Northwestern
starting in the mid 90's is still considered the benchmark for how to
take a program out of the dumpster.
I like Fitz's approach, doing it with style and class, not to mention
high graduation rates.
