[NU Sports] Loss #1

The comment from the “color guy” was that Illinois guarded the NU outside shot better in the 2nd half, and used Tisdale to disrupt the back door cut.

You saw NU slashing to the basket more in the 2nd half – it was a game that was crying for some of Coble’s playground antics.

But if nobody’s hurt, we beat them at WR.

Tisdale was the man. I agree with you that NU is going to struggle when a team has a 7-1 center who goes 11-14 from the floor and 9-11 at the free throw line. When you look at the rest of the stats, though, NU was tough on the offensive boards and was 11-15 from the line.

Where the game was lost, however was at the three point arc in the second half. NU was 11-23 in the first half and 4-17 in the second half. NU just went cold from the floor and couldn't really get anything going to the basket until late in the game, so it was even more impressive that they hung in there and took the game to overtime. They were able to do that by taking care of the ball and forcing a lot of Illini mistakes.

This team is the real deal and has the best chance of any team in recent memory to make the big dance, so let's all enjoy the ride.

Jeff

We played pretty well tonight. Shurna was very good, and Thompson was his
usual solid self. Crawford is the real deal and may be outstanding once he
shakes off froshitis. Add the traditional 1 under the "L" column for an NU
Big Ten opener. We lost because Illinois has a center, and we don't. We
could have a lot of these come-up-short type games this season and will win
a few of them.
