Although Jim Ryun was the World Record Holder in the Mile (at age 19!), the
1500 meters, and the 800 meters, those are all considered "middle distance"
events. Anything beyond 1500 meters is a "distance" event. Prefontane was a
relatively decent miler (he ran around 354) but his forte was the 5,000
meters (American Record Holder, 4th in Munich Oly 5K final). Ryun had decent
400 speed (45 seconds) but neither one would be considered a sprinter by any
stretch of the imagination. Nowadays, most world-class "distance" runners
(as in the Marathon) are also world-class in the 5K-10K and in some cases
