To be fair to all the musicians involved:
Jorge Mester and John Nelson are the "official" listed conductor of the Orchestra and Chorus on the Carnegie Hall concert.
The Stoned Guest was conducted by John Nelson (assisted by Will Jordan and Bill Macy). He was leading the Hoople Heavy Opera Company.
The composer of record was P.D.Q. Bach - the real composer is thankfully lost to the music world.
The Carnegie Hall concert recording features a piece by Professor P. Schickele, "The Unbegun Symphony" a work in 2 movements III - Minuet and IV - Andante-Allegro. When you listen to it, you are always reminded of other great works in history, and as the Professor says, "Audiences go out whistling the tunes."
Having grown up in New York, close to where Ivars did, I always tried to get in for the annual Farewell Concert, usually held about now - between Christmas and New Years. The best opening still is when the Gorilla chases the Professor down the main aisle at Avery Fisher hall, only to be "shot" by the stage manager so the show can go on.
Some of Schickele's instrumentation may have influenced the Blue Man Group's use of plastic pipe altho he is not credited with the extension of some of the professor's instrumentation.
He is quite a character.

Actually the maestro's name really IS John Smith! In the recording I
have he stumbles offstage just before the "great burlap curtain" arises.
