FIRST REPORT: The Bigger Ten
The Big Ten, one of the most successful conferences in college sports, recently announced its desire to expand to twelve schools; a move that would allow it to join football's other power conferences in ultimately staging its own revenue-producing championship game and keep itself relevant past the end of its regular season in mid-November. The discussion of potential new members has included Missouri of the Big 12 and Big East schools Rutgers and Pittsburgh amongst others. While the monetary benefits of such a move are undeniable, Pittsburgh men’s basketball coach Jamie Dixon said last week that he does not support it. "I can't see how any [Big East] team would improve where they're at by movement," Dixon said. "It's great talk. It's exciting to hear about it and talk about it. But at the end of the day who is going to improve their position from our conference? Nobody." Today on Outside the Lines, the impact of potential Big Ten expansion and its ripple effect on the current structure of collegiate sports.
