Regarding the college football coaching movement issues being discussed, I
agree with those who say this is best handled in the contracts of the
individual coaches, not by some overarching NCAA mandate (which, in fact,
may not have any legal standing).  Unlike the amateur student-athletes on
the field, the coaches are professionals and should have some freedom to
move around, just as most of us do in our professions.  They are under
enough public scrutiny already and have a big check/balance already: media
scrutiny, which very few other professions have to deal with.

If a school doesn't want a coach interviewing elsewhere or leaving, put
penalties in the contract.  See Boston College, who fired their head coach a
year ago after he interviewed for an NFL gig in direct opposition to his
contract and administration's wishes.  Put a penalty in the contract, like
Rich Rodriguez's at West Virginia, and force them to pay millions back to
the school.

While it's unfortunate that some students can't stick with their preferred
coach, it's just a fact of life.  If the NCAA removed that rule it would
create a huge headache, especially for the players who are already at the
new school.  For those complaining that college football is semi-pro as it
is, removing the one year transfer rule would make it even worse.

The biggest problem is that there is way too much emotion involved in
college football for people (players, fans) to act rationally about such a
move, which typically isn't the case in corporate America where such moves
happen all the time.
