About academics..most BT universities hold to what are known as NCAA  
standards, which allow an athlete to play sports if they have a minimum high  
school education, elite institutions like NU, Stanford and Tulane (where I  
learned firsthand that debate about these standards is fierce) require a higher 
 level of academic achievement for admission. The actual requirements at 
each  university are not know, but graduation rates tell as much as anything. 
Colleges  that require more than the NCAA minimum are seldom among the elite 
football  programs, IMHO.
