Carl:

Thanks for picking up my error. I began reading Naval Proceedings and Naval History when I started doing Investor relations consulting work for Grumman several years ago. I figured that that was the quickest way to pick up on the Navy's "alphabet soup". I stuck with these publications long after that because I always find something interesting in them.

John-great pick-up. As a former naval officer and devoted reader of Naval History, I enjoyed the article.
Slight clarification-Hagan was not the commanding officer of the destroyer Johnston at Samar-he was the gunnery officer. During that battle she was commanded by LCDR Ernest Evans, who won the Medal Of Honor (posthumous) for his actions.

For anybody who would like further information I highly recommend Jason Hornsfischer's book "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors", which came out a few years ago. Excellent description of an heroic, tragic morning.

In the October, 2009 edition of Naval History

published by the Naval Instute (www,usni.org) there is a great article about a

Northwestern alumnus, Robert Hagan, who commanded a destroyer at the battle of

Samar and helped to block Japanese battleships from attacking US forces at the Leyte

landings.
