One thing that works against newspapers such as the Trib , is that people got to loal weekend type papers to get the local stories and to get the coupons, etc. Maybe I'm bizarre but we rarely watch the local TV news rather counting on the Harrisburg paper for that. When e lived in Landenberg , PA which is right on the Delaware border, we used to get the Wilmington paper which was so parochial that the management seemed to thing any news outside Delaware was out of bounds. My guess is too that people have so little time these days that if they read a newspaper it is because it is mandatory to their business, e.g. The Wall Street Journal. As much as it pained me, I even had to read the NY Times to makes sure they didn't screw up a financial release coming from our company, which happened too frequently. Corrections were printed too late to be of any use. By contrast Reuters and the Dow Jones Wire would print corrections As soon as they got them. Admittedly electronic news can be corrected quickly

The carnage is not limited to Chicago, the Tribune or the newspaper
industry. Last night Len Berman , an institution in NY TV sports coverage for a
quarter century, signed off for the last time on Channel 4, WNBC . While the
parting was supposedly "amicable", it appears that Len decided to leave
before he was pushed out--because of his big salary. In the past year many
Channel 4 reporters--including Medill graduate school alum Jay DeDapper (the
station's top political reporter)--have been shown the door--and it is
probably the best of the local newscasts--or at least it used to be.
