Lake the Posts had a good/concise take on the newspaper situation.

The Blog Is Becoming Mightier Than The Pen

Personally I dropped the Tribune a few years back, because their NU coverage was poor and they could not deliver the paper early enough in the morning. I dropped the Daily Herald because our carrier refused to double-bag on rainy days despite multiple(10+) calls. Now I subscribe to a weekly ultra-local paper and even that has too much reguritated Sun-Times crap. I think a very local weekly paper with a lot on prep sports, local events, local development, and town government could be successful.

Somebody definitely has to find a way to make money in reporting the news as without investigative journalism our politicians would go unfettered.

In general politics don't fit this board, but attacking another list member DEFINITELY does not fit. If I see a post I think is off-topic I ignore it as this is not the appropriate forum for flame wars.

I know a lot of people take delight in the recent demise of newspapers, and a lot of them say that they get all their news from the Internet anyway.

But I wonder when the readers will realize that even that info on the Internet still comes from somewhere, and without these newspaper organizations to bring coverage of football games, stats, features, etc. it's basically going to be press releases from SID offices and bloggers. And they have their place, but I certainly wouldn't want my daily sports report to be all dry SIDspeak full of typos and raving blogger bait.

And I know we never got as much local love from the Chicago press as the Doh!mers, but with resources spread thin already, you wonder if the AP will even send a stringer to some of those games in Evanston. I seem to remember a Duke game in recent years where I couldn't find a writeup online, even with the AP. Good luck with Indiana-NU recaps in the future!

Oh well, some of us will mourn the days when we'd fight the brisk wind to pick up both the Trib and Sun Times from the corner machines and settle in for some nice breakfast reading at the dining halls on a chilly Evanston morning.:(
