By that logic, might as well eliminate men's basketball then, too. No top half of the Big Ten finishes in decades. Of course, no NCAA tourneys ever. Only NBAers the last 30 years, if I'm not mistaken, were Eschmeyer and McKinney.

The struggles ain't recent. Yes, there have been a few NU players who made it to the majors, but for the past several years the program has been anything but successful. I think that the last time NU woon the bigten Lindstrom was the coach and that goes back a long way.

Given that NU has a baseball alumnus who is the current manager of the New York Yankees and has had numerous other major and minor league players over the last 20 years, elimination of the baseball program appears to be an overreaction to any recent struggles.

Looking at the baseball team's dismal record to date, which isn't much different from prior years, why not drop baseball as a varsity sport and start up a men's lacrosse program. If you want to start slowly start it up as a club sport. A friend of mine who has been involved with lacrosse for years tells me that Michigan is about to start up lacrosse a a varsity sport after having had a club program. This same person played for Michigan State which later dropped it for title IX reasons. His opinion is that Northwestern would likely do well and could feed off of the success of the women's program.
