Something about that article does not wash.

"...Toledo, Iowa, Miami, Butler and Stanford offered Jordan scholarships..."

Stanford is a flyer in that group.  Could they possibly have a typo and mean some other school?  

Iowa would offer based on Chicago proximity as the Tribune is the most popular big city paper in Iowa City.  I assume Miami was Miami(OH) given Toledo and Butler.

My understanding was his first son could not get into Northwestern and he went to Loyola Academy.  At Whitney Young...

Simple, when the older son wanted to walk on at NU, Carmody didn't want him
- he's now at Illinois on scholarship.
