The women's lax team pulled off a big win Friday night against Duke. They were actually down 3-0 (and not playing particularly well) halfway through the first half, but turned it around from that point on. They squeezed out a 1 goal lead at halftime, and then dominated Duke in the second half. Morgan Lathrop was particularly impressive in goal in that second half.
Big crowd on hand too--1300 and some according to the box score, which is probably more than the stands actually hold. What a cool atmosphere--beautiful setting under the lights out there on the lake fill, lots of students on hand and a very vocal crowd. I felt more energy in that small-but-capacity crowd than on many a Saturday at a half-empty Ryan field.
Unfortunately, Saturday brought some bad news, as Hilary Bowen apparently went down with a knee injury early in the Saturday night game (a blowout against Cal). Tribune says she had an MRI Sunday morning, with an update expected in the next day or so. Losing Bowen would be huge, as evidenced by her monster game against Duke. Like losing Tyrell Sutton huge.
Fortunately, the Wildcats are very deep--I think they could still win it all even without Bowen, but it would be a much bigger challenge. Hopefully she'll be back to finish out her senior year in style.
I've said it before, but if you're in the area and haven't checked out a game at Lakeside Field, I highly recommend doing so.
