[NU Sports] Purdue Game

The Brewer remark was thrown in because one of the big plays was the WR pass
downfield and Brewer is one who could let 'er fly if that play is called.

Kafka has to fight the "happy feet" syndrome, which is the only thing - IMHO
- he's lacking to become a top flight Big 10 QB in the NU system. He
demonstrated his ability to make the pass plays in the Minny game, but he
also showed a lot of run, something that can be stopped by putting a spy on
him 100% of the time.

When RW & Co. introduced the spread at NU, one of the basic rules was that
the QB is the other RB. Kustok, & Baz both ran, in some cases too much for
we old timers. I think it is interesting that both Mike Dunbar and Kevin
Wilson are reported to be talking with the offensive guys. Dunbar was the
guy who recruited CJ heavily, Wilson of course came up with the idea of the
spread, and probably will be the odds on favorite to win the national
championship next year with the spread at OU.

Kafka should be turning 21 and should be going through the rededication that
the real stars do when they make the "age of saloon attendance." As always,
I hope for the best and want to see Kafka succeed, but behind him are the
guys who represent the future for the Cats, and as Fitz said, Persa is
pushing for playing time.

We'll see.

First off, I doubt Brewer is taking any snaps at QB - his skills will be
very much needed at WR as NU has to establish some legitimate threats at
that position after losing their top 3 from the past few years.

I believe Kafka has the skills to be a very solid QB, especially considering
his skills (primarily his running ability) coupled with McCall's spread
offense, which utilizes QB runs quite often. I actually think that the NU
offense will be able to move the ball more consistently this year thanks to
Kafka's skills fitting better with the system than CJ, who always preferred
passing over running (even though he was a considered a "dual-threat" QB out
of HS). Also, consider that the very young OL from last year will have a
year of experience under their belt and some talented underclassmen nipping
at their heels. Although the offense lost a ton of playmakers, things may
not be as bad as everyone is expecting.

Something happens to star players when they turn 18, and again 21. Not sure
why but for some reason, the HS kids I see every day seem to figure out that
it takes hard work to play at the top level when they turn 18. You see the
same thing in college kids when they turn 21, between soph and junior years
if they redshirt.

Kafka is in that second group, and if he is for real, we'll know at the
spring game. If not, Fitz has already said that Persa is pushing and will
continue to push. (and I wonder if Brewer is taking any snaps?)

There is hope for our game in W. Lafayette on October 3rd.? Purdue's QB
hopeful, a redshirt soph, is academically ineligible (suspended) for 2009
season:?

They have a fifth-year senior who will probably be the QB, but I have to
assume that if he were a real stud QB, he would have been playing over the
past few years.

Now if Mr. Kafka can add the arm to the legs........
