I disagree, you take what the defense gives you.
They were going to block the middle of the field, with two MLB's keying on Sutton. Once CJ started picking the secondary apart with the mid range passing, the LBs had to shift to pass defense and suddenly the lanes opened up.
Yes, it is possible that the O-line stepped it up a bit, but until Sutton broke loose with his first TD, there were a lot of Saluki's in the box, working against the Cats' zone blocking.
Yes, I'd give the ball to Sutton also, but not when an opposing player is popping up in the running lane every time. You run something else that opens up the lanes, then you go back to the base game plan.
Anyway, what we might be seeing on the first series is a scripted set of plays designed to try to see what defensive wrinkles have been introduced to stop our set plays. I knew one coach who had a 10 play script that he'd run to see where the LBs and D-backs were going to go in different sets. The spotters would watch specific players on each play and report back down to the sidelines.
Once he had seen enough, he'd start executing the game plan. There were those fans who couldn't understand why he didn't run the first 6 plays, but later in the game, when the traps were working, you could figure out what was actually happening.
Mason should know better, and between his second guessing, and the PBP guy rooting for SIU at times, I wished I had WGN available at my son's house. Oh well, maybe Saturday.
