I tried to send this message a little over an hour ago, but there was something messed up with my outgoing mail server. The rain is letting up now. It might stop altogether by kickoff:
Yep, the rain is falling heavily and steadily right now, and I'm just 3 blocks from the stadium. Looking at the radar, I'd say we'll still have some rain at kickoff, but it may taper off into the early afternoon.
If it's raining hard like this during the game, that would cut down on the passing game, but I think our excellent running backs would then steal the show. I suppose the rain could somewhat favor SIU, but we really ought not have trouble winning the battle of the trenches against this opponent.
I also distinctly remember that Michigan game. We go drenched just getting to the game. Each team fumbled the ball like 5 times. At one point, given the futility of the passing game, and all the fumbles on handoffs, we just snapped the ball directly to D'Wayne Bates and let him try to run outside, I suppose recognizing that he was the best athlete on the team. I think we did that for several downs, but it didn't work. That was actually homecoming in 1998. We played at Michigan in 1997.
The last rainy game I can recall was Minnesota in 2001. That was our last win that year before the "great collapse of 2001."
Well, this is when it pays to have season tickets under the overhang of the upper deck. By the way, I have at least 2 extra tickets for next week's Ohio game. I'll sell them to a list member or NU fan for $15 each, which is $13 off the already-discounted season-ticket face value. They're at about the 35-yard line, west side, under the overhang, but not too high so that the upper deck doesn't generally enter your sight line. You can't get a sunburn in these seats, but I consider that a feature.

As I sit in my living room(25 miles from Dyche) at 7:25am looking out the window at heavy rain I think "I hope they built a retractable dome in the past 14 days...".
Seriously we will wear our waterproof purple attire and stick it out, but how does the soggy weather and even soggier field change the game?
I remember the 1997 Michigan game where the rain was coming down in torrents. We had the lead for long periods of time. Barnett took a safety rather than try to put from deep in our own end. Tailback #3 a freshman Justin Fargus(later transferred to USC) suddenly came alive and Michigan won by 4 or 5.
Go Cats!
