Saw something encouraging this morning. SIU played Hampton this week and
won 37-31 in Carbondale. But while they shut down Hampton's running game (47
yards), Hampton turned to the passing game, and sophomore QB Herbert Bynes, in
just his third start, set a school record with 407 yards passing and 3 TD's
(also 3 interceptions). Hampton also lost at least one fumble.

That would seem to imply that SIU might have trouble against a strong
passer. The O-line has to open holes for Sutton, CJ has to avoid mistakes, and the
receivers need to catch everything thrown their way.

The D needs to bring down SIU's backs at the point of contact (too many Duke
backs broke too many tackles), play closer coverage on the receivers (huge
cushions down at Durham) and harass SIU's QB (Duke guy had way too much time
most of the night).

Somewhat arrogantly, I thought, the SIU beat writer made the claim

"If SIU can shore up its secondary, it may have a shot at beating its third
straight Football Bowl Subdivision team in a row."

After giving up 407 yards to an unsung FCS QB, only sacking him once,
getting at least four turnovers and hanging on to win by 6 at home ?

We need a strong performance to put this upstart program in its place.

Fellow Wildcat Faithful,
I had a great time in North Carolina, but that game was ugly to watch. There
are
plenty of areas for criticism and improvement. The defense kept us in the
game,
but they had a lot of help from dropped Duke passes. The offense was just
out of
 synch from the start.

However, we won and we're 2-0. I didn't like how the game went, but I had a
though yesterday while I was waiting for my flight - every good team has a
bad
game. You can look back at nearly every team in the 9+ win column and say,
"they
should have one less win because ???? should have beaten them." The only
difference for our Cats' this year is that we survived the ugly game as
opposed
 to losing it.

Don't worry, the sky is not falling. The team will learn from this early
lesson
and improve greatly the next two week. We always match up better in Big Ten
play
anyway. We're still going to start 4-0 and the offense will be clicking by
the
 time we head to Iowa.

 Victory & Honor,
 Jim
