[NU Sports] Whew!

Will leave Durham for home shortly but must add a note of genuine  distress 
and anxiety about NU football.  Duke is improved this year but is  nothing 
close to the Big Ten teams the Cats will face this year.  The Blue  Devils 
out-played and out-coached Northwestern in every way except the final  score.  The 
bad punt snap was probably the difference in the game, but as  the stats showed, 
NU sputtered on offense and the NU defense at times looked  absolutely 
helpless.  Indeed, the only NU pass defense evident last night  were a few errant 
Duke quarterback throws, which if completed also would  have spelled doom for 
the Cats.  The NU secondary is falling back into its  old ways of leaving too 
much separation from the  receivers. 
 
Yes, we had a good defensive stop at the end and got the W, but no one  
should have any illusions or great confidence now about the rest of the  season.  
The Cats have a long way to go to deal with a tough Big  Ten schedule (and 
perhaps even SIU and Ohio).  I once hoped for 8-4  this year, but my expectations 
have dropped to 6-6 and may sink further in the  next two weeks.
