Actually I kind of like your original suggestion at least in terms of getting a bowl bid. Having the easier team at home increases the possibility to gets us to 7 wins. dOSU at home or dOSU in Columbus is a very likely loss in 29 out of 30 years.
Beyond that below are some of my criteria for an ideal schedule:
* If we have an underclass quarterback play all the hard teams on the road. We would probably lose those games anyway so might as well make it trial by fire.
* Else if we have an upperclass QB play the hard teams at home where we have a greater chance for victory and play the more tasty cupcakes on the road.
This years schedule gets very near that scenario with the possible flip-flop between Michigan and Purdue/MSU depending on which Michigan team is the real one.
Iowa Away - easier
MSU Home - tougher
Purdue Home - tougher under Tiller
Indiana Away - easier
Minnesota Away - easier
dOSU Home - tougher
Michigan Away - ?
Ill-whine-I Home - tougher this year

Of course I meant 'would NOT want to....'
