Actually, a few years back the Motor City Bowl made a backup contract with
the Big East to provide a bowl eligible team if enough teams are not
available from the Big Ten. UConn visited in 2004 under the agreement.
Notre Dame is available to be picked as a Big East team, and I don't know if
this backup agreement includes ND, but it looks like ND would be in a
position to drop down into this spot. The Big East has 6 bowl slots
available and currently has 6 bowl eligible teams and Louisville would be 7
(they have 5 wins with a game to play). 5 of those teams have 7 wins or
better (ND is 6-6 on the year) and Rutgers can still reach 7 wins (their
final game is against Louisville). So, if Rutgers wins, ND gets locked out
of all of the Big East bowl slots (they must select teams with a winning
record over those with .500 records) and, ND could very well be looking at
the Motor City Bowl.
Now, if the agreement with the Motor City Bowl doesn't include ND, they
would be stuck with an at-large spot. Those spots are constrained by the
winning record rule as well, and all teams with winning records must be
placed before .500 teams.
It will be interesting to see where they go, especially considering that
they turned down a bowl bid to the Insight Bowl, I believe, a few seasons
ago.
