According to Wikipedia (not always the most reliable of sources), it's
a name that goes back to 1929.  (My guess is that it was an attempt at
humor at the time, as the game has a history of anti-social behavior.)

A better question might be why the trophy for the game is a platypus?  

Wiki also says the trophy was misplaced for 40 years, I think I can 
understand why.
