[NU Sports] Conteh out for OSU game

There's this bizarre new offensive formation floating around high schools throughout the country called the A11 (www.a11offense.com).  It basically takes the spread offense to the Nth degree, and features two QBs (or a QB and RB) and all 11 offensive players potentially eligible, depending on who lines up on the line of scrimmage, etc.  It's legal at the high school level in most states (though some have banned it), but only legal on 3rd and 4th downs in college because it relies on a loophole in the rule book to line up in a scrimmage kick formation.

It's best if one of the two QBs is a good runner and the other is a good passer, and the defense doesn't know what to expect on any given play.  That's why it comes to mind now, as the Cats decide how to best use Bacher and Kafka.

It was invented by coaches at Piedmont High School, in a suburb east of San Francisco surrounded by Oakland.  It's also prompted a big debate in high school football, with pushback from those who prefer a more traditional style and say the A11 is gaming the system.

It's been featured in the NY Times, Washington Post and, as I quite selfishly point out since I did the story, NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95035232).

The goal is for underdogs to compete with the big schools.  Sound familiar?

Oh, and PHS wears purple uniforms, too...

I think the pros call it the Wildcat -

Line up the #1 and #2 QB in the backfield. The starter calls the signals but
the center can snap it to either player.

And I think Kafka can probably run the traps from the setback position if
needed.

But then Simmons has looked good in the few times we've seen him, and we've
recruited a few other guys who can tote the rock.

Not happy about losing all these guys just prior to dOSU, but hey, we're
playing so much better than when I was there in the early 70's. We'd play 2
games and half of the starters would be out with injuries. I prefer us
crying over one or two players who are out.

It is a bummer that our two Senior RB's are hurt enough to miss games
however....

Go Cats
Destroy dOSU
