I believe the ESPN/ABC contract with the Big Ten conference specifies a
number of games that will appear on those networks, and the contract also
stipulates that each team will appear on the BTN in at least one Big Ten
conference game. Also, I believe that the BTN gets the #2 pick of available
games (over ESPN but after ABC) on some occasions (which is how
OSU/Wisconsin ended up on the BTN last year). I think that the increase in
Big Ten games on the national networks is a result of the restructured
contract after the BTN was created; note that all 2:30PM ABC games are also
"reverse mirror" meaning that if they are not on ABC in a certain area they
will be on ESPN there, guaranteeing a national audience.
But do note that the SEC just signed a big deal with ESPN that will give
them a lot of big games that will likely fall in the evenings and will keep
most Big Ten games to 11AM or 2:30PM (CT) start times.
