[NU Sports] Say it ain't so.................

If PSU wins out and is chosen to go to the National Championship Game, that counts toward the Big Ten automatic bid.? The SEC will get 2, the Big XII will get 2, and a non-BCS team will get 1.? That leaves 1 spot unclaimed.? I doubt a Pac-10, ACC or Big East team is going to get a 2nd slot, so that means it is between the Big Ten and another non-BCS school.? I'm betting on the Big Ten.

However, I believe (correct me if I am wrong) the Rose Bowl tie-in doesn't vanish.? Back a few years ago (2001?) the Orange Bowl chose Iowa?with its first pick?leaving Washington State to play Oklahoma or USC?in the Rose bowl.? The Rose Bowl was furious at the Orange for using its pick to take Iowa, and it wasn't going to take USC, so I believe the rules were amended so that another BCS bowl could not poach a conference tie-in without the tie-in?bowl's OK.? If the Rose wanted Minny or Northwestern, it could deny another BCS bowl of that privilege to maintain its traditional tie-in.

This raises a question that came up implicitly earlier this year but was never addressed. Assume PSU wins out AND gets into the National Championship game. Does PSU's selection count as the Big Ten automatic bid to the BCS? If so, then the Big Ten's normal Rose Bowl/BCS automatic bid selection rules never come into play. If they did, then we would go over Minnesota and OSU because we will have beaten them. But I know that the 1 vs. 2 national championship game trumps the automatic selection and then I don't think the Big Ten would get an automatic selection.?
?
But there are other questions about this scenario, as well. How are you accounting for Michigan State? I assume you figure they'll lose to PSU, but then they would be 6-2 in the Big Ten, also tied for second place. So you would have a 4-way tie for second place in the Big Ten, with two teams 9-3 overall and two teams 10-2 overall.?
?
To respond to one of your other points, if we should win out, I predict that we will be ranked in the top 12. After this weekend, with a win against OSU and a record of 8-2, our ranking would shoot way up.?
