Journalist doing math, always an adventure, this time from the Telander
column on Girardi:
"...The new manager of the Yankees rubs his three-eighths-of-an-inch
military cut Thursday night at Northwestern and says, 'If it weren't so
cold out, I'd cut it.'
"You know, get it down to a manageable, no-nonsense half-inch or
less..."
Um. Since I've got a third-grader, and she and I are spending our
evenings doing her math homework, and she's doing fractions, um, isn't
three-eights of an inch already less than a half-inch, which by my
reckoning would be four-eighths?
Don't know which is the better part of this excellent effort by the
Sun-Times. Maybe that it slipped through the copy desk this way.
By the way, and believe me, I have also been guilty on occasion of
excellent math adventures. (My last was trying to sort out how many
athletes and how many nations are involved in a potential reshuffling of
medals in the wake of Marion Jones' doping admission.)
Also, this -- from later in the Telander column:
"The Yankees play in front of the world and have a payroll rumored to be
about $218 million.
"Fourteen goes into 218 how many times?
"You try to do the math in your head: uh, 10, 20..."
Ah, now we all see the problem :>
Go Wildcats - Alan
