[NU Sports] Shuffling the Offensive Assistant Coaches

In the press conference introducing the new coordinators last Friday Fitz
did say that McCall would be calling the plays despite the new titles for
Ingalls and Johns, so I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that those guys will
suddenly have more authority within the game. Instead, I would assume that
they will be more responsible for those aspects of the offense and not just
for coaching the line and the receivers. Since the running backs and
"superbacks" play a key role in both aspects (running and passing) maybe
this is a way to integrate them under both areas instead of keeping them
separated under their own area. Or, more likely, it may be due to Cushing
receiving the recruiting coordinator title and to better distribute
responsibilities on the offensive side of the ball.

Anyways it will be interesting to see what direction the offense will go in
2008 considering a couple of factors: a new OC, veteran skill players (QB,
RB, and WRs), and a new and untested OL (at least 3/5 will be new
starters). There were indications in the press conference that the offense
will look a little different than in 2008 - and I think many hope that means
that NU won't go for the pass-heavy play calling we saw in 2007 (which is
also indicated by McCall's desire to run from the spread).

What I'm most excited about, though, is the defense. Considering Hankwitz's
experience coupled with a lot of returning defensive talent, despite the
lack of on the field production this decade I can most definitely see a
large improvement in store for 2008. The only question is how far can the
defense improve.
