I'm not sure Northwestern gets 'pick of the litter', or ever will.

Tom Dienhart reported on the TSN site that Fitz was a very popular man 
at the College Football Coaches Association meetings, with both coordinator 
jobs and a third coaching vacancy to fill.

I've never understood the logic behind having co-coordinators, maybe
Bielema came to that decision as well.  

I would assume that even though NU didn't play Wisconsin last year
(and doesn't play them again in 2008) that Fitz has seen enough of 
Hankwitz's work up-close and on films to be familiar with it.  His
resume looks good enough, he's coached a number of top-20 ranking
defenses and has a national championship under his belt, too.

So, in that respect, I'm sure he's more than 'better than nothing'.
