No it started in December 1939,when the U of Chicago board decided in a
series of special meetings to get out of intercollegiate football. At that time
a big time college football coach could make $25,000 and a full professor
made $5,000. The NU faculty has been against big time football ever since.

Back in the 70's [and it probably started in the 60's] there was what
appeared
to be a concerted effort to marginalize athletics at NU.
