[NU Sports] Tiller on the way out at Purdue?

Jonathan,

Thanks for the post.

The way I read the quote from KW, he was saying that if you want the
assistants to make a long-term commitment to NU, you've got to pay them more.
Otherwise they are going to look at NU as a stepping stone to bigger and
better things. He didn't say that no one wants to work at NU. If you look
at where NU assistants have gone, it has been a very good career move for a
lot of guys. So we may just have to accept that until we get a new AD and
start putting more people in the seats, we are going to continue to see good
assistant coaches come and go.

Jeff

In case this article wasn't circulated on this list, here is the Daily Herald
article that quotes former NU OC Kevin Wilson specifically regarding
assistant coaches' salaries:

What facts lead you to assume that money is an issue?

The only evidence that I am aware of where money was an issue with in
the
past 15 years were with Barnett and Taylor. From all that we can
tell, NU
has learned from that. From what little information we have, RW was
paid
quite well. Murphy hired some of the best coaches in the country in
women's
softball and lacrosse and they have produced.

There was some discussion that I've seen recently where at least one
assistant coach said that it was expensive to live in Evanston, but I
think
that we already knew that. The real issue for assistant coaches is
what the
	opportunities for advancement are.

I share your anxiety about these open positions. NU is going to take
its
time in finding a successor to Murphy and I suspect that, more than
anything
else, is having some affect on closing the deal on new hires.

Why hasn't NU been able to find an AD or offensive and defensive
coordinators? I fear that NU is once again going on the cheap which
gave us
the disasters preceding Barnett's arrival that kept us in the Big
Ten.
