Because most of what the NBA does has very little to do with what it takes
to administer a diverse college sports program.  Yes, it MIGHT be helpful 
to have a head basketball coach with NBA experience (though how many former
NBA coaches have been successful in the college ranks afterwards?), but 
in the AD's chair it is not going to make much difference except possibly 
once every few years when it comes time to hire to hire a basketball coach, 
and maybe not then either.  

I suspect most NBA teams change basketball coaches more frequently than 
Northwestern does, so the people hiring those NBA coaches don't appear 
to be geniuses.
