Pat Ryan said we would be excited about the hire.
I am not excited about this hire. His Chicagoland upbringing, UofIll degree and the fact that he worked at Notre Shame are not that impressive and NIU...
NIU underachieves even though it should have MAC dominance based on its geography. NIU is the second largest state university in the largest state and it has no MAC competition in IL. Look at all the Michigan and Ohio MAC schools and who they are competing against. Michigan, tOSU, and even MSU are behemoths compared to UofIll and yet NIU is not gained a foothold in illinois.
Maybe I am being negative, but I believe this guy is not comparable to Murphy -- academic undergrad, law degree, pro football player, academic school ad, etc.

Looks like NIU's Phillips will be headed to Evanston. I am a little
surprised how quickly the process went, although he was identified as a
possibility early and if he impressed the NU administration I suppose that
is why they jumped on it. Hopefully NIU will find someone to continue his
success.
