[NU Sports] NU recent past recruiting history stats

Here's an interesting take from college football news, which is now a Rivals
site, that re-ranks the 2004 class based on actual on-field performance.
Needless to say, the rankings undergo some rather significant revisions.

I'm not sure how they come up with "stars" now - but someone did a study of
Div

I recruiting ratings early on in the recruiting site wars and tracked the 5
and

4 star kids to see how they performed over time.

The 5 star kids, barring injury or legal issues, were truly impact players -

guys who started early in college and who played on Sunday.

The 4 star's were more likely to play a significant role in their team of

choice, not as many played early [before their Junior years]

3 star kids were important in the long haul, but I think I remember that
they

usually didn't have much impact until they were RS Juniors.

What amazed me about the ESPN radio guys Wed night was that they were very

pointed in their evaluation of the Evil Empire's lack of performance given
the

supposed quality of their recruits. I think it was Salisbury who pointed out
all

the 5 star QBs who have signed with ND but who have now left the program.

They also pointed out that Miami U had made an effort to defend Florida from

outside schools - they cleaned up on kids from two top FL programs which was
how

they earned ESPN's #1 ranking.

For whatever reasons, NU has not enjoyed the presence of the immediate

difference makers having to allow our recruits the time to develop into
decent

players. Despite all the growling over various assistants, under Walker, NU
had

a good record of players improving from their virtually unknown status to
NFL

stars, Barry Cofield and Luis Castillo being two salient examples. Napo and

Gardner played big roles after they were drafted but injuries have taken a
toll

on their performance of late. Not sure about all the running backs, but
Wright

and maybe Herron have settled into significant roles for their teams. Jury
is

still out on Basanez.

The point is that none of these guys were rated higher than 3 stars by
either

service. I wonder if Tom Lemming's "super" ratings aren't a better predictor
of

future play?

New OC, New DC, New D-Line and a couple of new assistant coordinators -
they're

on display now, and how they use these 3 star kids over the next three years

will tell the tale.
