It's national signing day, there's a home conference basketball game
tonight, and not one post?? Okay, so the apathy about the basketball 'Cats
is maybe understandable, but what do people on the list think about the
football class? I saw a Sun-Times article that placed the NU recruiting
class fifth in the Big Ten, but I don't see how we could be nearly that high
(Rivals has us at 10th in the conference-ahead of IU-and 69th in the nation;
Scout also has us at 69th in the nation but last in the Big Ten). I think I
was more impressed by last year's class, to be honest, but of course we
never know how it will turn out until a couple of years down the road. We
are getting some guys with good size and smarts, but I'd like to see a
little more speed. I'm sure not having an OC or DC hurt quite a bit this
year. I'm not expecting recruiting magic from Fitz overnight, but I hope
things start to click a little better in the next two years . . . especially
with Rodriguez, Brewster, and Zook now in the Big Ten.
Holy Moses, did Brewster do an amazing job coming off a 1-11 season. The
Gophers will have a top-20 class at the end of the day (better than
Illinois), with seven four-star recruits and a slew of high-three stars. In
comparison, Mason successfully recruited just four four-star guys total in
the six years prior. The only slight disappointments were that Brewster's
son Nolan, a four-star safety at Mullen HS in Denver, went to Texas (the
only one of 20 Texas verbals who was not from a Texas high school!) and
Minnesota's top two high school players went to Notre Dame (Michael Floyd)
and Ohio State (Willie Mobley).
