I think a national search is common among our peer group. That doesn't
foreclose an internal candidate; it just means that an internal candidate
will have to compete with a national pool and be evaluated on the same basis
before the search committee. The job of president of a prestigious private
research university is significantly different today than it was 20 years
ago. That doesn't mean that an internal candidate would not make a good
president, but picking someone who is already a president increases the odds
of success. Especially, in this case, where the Schapiro was the president
of a prestigious private school. A research university may be substantially
different than a liberal arts college, but the part of the job dealing with
fundraising, which is substantial, is not.
