1) I don't think you have to worry about NU reducing its financial aid
packages. If anything, elite schools have been increasing financial
aid recently to compete for the best students regardless of financial
need.

2) Indeed, that's apparently what's happened at Williams. If you read
all the FAQs at that site, you'll see that 100% of each student's
financial need is met with grants and no loans.

3) Although NU hasn't entirely eliminated loans in its financial aid
packages, this past year it eliminated loans for students with the
greatest need and capped loans at $20,000 over 4 years. Any financial
need in excess of $20,000 over four years is satisfied with grants,
and students with the greatest need don't have to take out any loans.
See http://www.northwestern.edu/newscenter/stories/2008/01/noloanpolicy.html

4) Keep in mind that this all applies to a student's "need" as
calculated by the financial aid office. Frequently the expected
family contribution as determined by the university is more than the
family wants to contribute. Therefore, many students will still take
out loans to meet the difference between the university's expected
family contribution and the actual family contribution.
