I don't know much about President Schapiro but I do know Williams - I have
ahd several close friends whose children went there, one of them played
hockey. It is probably the most sports oriented liberal arts college in
America. They have won the D-III Directors Cup almost as many times as
Stanford has won the D-I Cup, if not more. They have a hockey dynasty that
regularly produces NHL players and wins national championships in both
genders. It is their signature sport. Football is a bit less successful as
is basketball, but only because the interest is not as great.

Schapiro knows exactly what he is walking into and I'm sure he embraces the
Big Ten and what it stands for with open arms. I feel good, from an
athletics standpoint, about this pick. From an academics standpoint and
from what little I have been able to determine, I feel pretty good too. It
would have been nice to have seen a little more research institution
background, and I'm sure the med school folks are probably screaming, but as
president of a "highly selective" liberal arts college, he must be a helluva
fundraiser or he wouldn't still have the job. That bodes well for NU. I am
encouraged by this hire and like Paul, just hope my intial reaction proves
true.
