Joe has hit on something I am aware of, through friends. Williams is a very
sports-oriented place, albeit one of the finest institutions of higher
education in the 50 States. The elder son of my son's travel soccer coach (I
managed the team.), as well as one of David's teammates on the travel team, both
play on the Williams soccer team, and I also know a guy who was the soccer
goalie there 35 years ago. I
I have to believe that President Schapiro will want to support the progress
that has been made in so many areas of our athletic program, and hopefully he
understands that doing well in sports, especially football, as long as we do
it right, only increases the profile of the University. His background--at
Williams, and before that USC, augurs well (In fact, he was Dean of the
College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Spoiled Children when
we played them in Pasadena.). And he went to college at Hofstra (on Long
Island, with a good sports program, especially Lacrosse) and did his grad work
at Penn (one of the Ivies that is actually good in sports).
Besides, he didn't even have to change colors to come to NU--Williams is
also a "Purple and White" place.:-)
I feel good about this hire. I hope the initial reaction proves to be the
reality.
