[NU Sports] Alamo not interested in Wisconsin

The story was always that we switched to the spread after Kevin Wilson sat
down next to RW on the way home from the last game and laid out how NU could
change to a no-huddle spread offense. I thought that was back in 2001, but
the ride home apparently was from Champaign in 2000, not a bowl.

According to the 2001 media guide, we switched to "a no-huddle spread" in
2000 [so it's another "senior moment" for da coach.]

Wilson left in January of 2002 to head to Oklahoma, and Dunbar took over
then.

The 2000 Alamo bowl against Nebraska looked like it would be closer as the
Cats offense scored 3 in the first quarter and 14 in the second, but the
defense couldn't stop Nebraska's triple option. My son the O-lineman, David,
watched the first half, pointed out that NU's zone blocking wasn't working
against the Nebraska D, then left to watch another bowl at a former
teammate's house.

Damien Anderson and Zack Kustok tried to get offense going, but UNL had 28
first downs to NU's 14, and had a 476 to 232 rushing yardage for the game.
NU just never got anything going in the 2nd half. Nebraska's D adjusted in
the 2nd half, and effectively shut the Cats' down. Anderson finished with
149 yards, but UNL's Dan Alexander had 240 with 2 TD's. UNL started passing
in the 2nd half and shredded the NU secondary for a bunch of scores.

Anyway, I'd love to put our present defense up against UNL's offense and see
what they can do. Same with CJ and the Cats offense. AND, I stand corrected,
Tom.

Go Cats
2008 we win a Bowl!

I'm confused. NU had already switched to the spread before playing Nebraska.
That's the offense that got us there. Or am I confusing years?

Although it doesn't sound like it will happen, Nebraska would be a very
tough, but interesting, matchup for Northwestern.

Nebraska's offense is probably as good as any we've played against. Ohio
State probably has quite a bit more big-play talent, but are not as
consistent. However, no team has really dominated our defense, so that would
be fun to watch.

And Nebraska has issues on D, although I'd hate to give Pelini 2-3 weeks to
work on stopping us.

Whoever we play, I sure hope Sutton is back. No disrespect to Simmons, but
Sutton is a special player that can make things happen whether he's running,
catching, or just blocking.
