Quite a few, though it can be fleeting. I often enjoy reading the
columnists that are assigned to write about something in particular: for
example, the college football column or the media column. The columnists
have opinions, but the focus is on the story. It's when they get
"promoted" to the personality column on the front page -- i.e., write
about whatever comes to mind, "in the wake of the news," etc. -- that
things tend to go downhill. That's when it becomes more about them (and
their "comedy" stylings or Around-the-Horn-esque bluster) and less about
sports. It has come to the point that whenever a columnist's face starts
appearing next to their column in the paper, I can usually expect to
lose respect for them soon. If they get a blog, well, don't even get me
started.
To single out just one name, I'll pick NU alum Teddy Greenstein. I like
reading his college football stuff in the Trib, and I wish him further
success, but I also remember the awful "personality" sports columns he
used to write for the Daily. I just hope that as his visibility
increases, the quality and accuracy don't go out the window like they
have done for so many others.
I wish it were otherwise, but...that's how I see it.
